Though the history of the Tamil language and Tamil Nadu dates back to 2^nd century BC, the history of Chennai is comparatively just about 400 years old. The city came into existence after the arrival of the East India Company in 1600 AD. It was an alternate port city to Masulipatnam that was fortified after acquisition from Raja of Chandragiri by an Englishman Francis Day in 1637. St George’s Fort until today remains the seat of power with the Tamil Nadu State Secretariat nestled with the same premises.

Chennai from its origin as a trading port has undergone significant transformation, more so since independence. The last decade after the opening up of the Indian economy, through the introduction of privatization and liberalization, has witnessed Herculean changes with the city transforming itself into one of the icons of the Indian development scenario. Including, improved infrastructure, industry, services, educational facilities and tourism, Chennai has become a hub thriving with activity.

From creating national leaders, scientists, professionals, entrepreneurs, literary persons, musicians, film stars and sports persons, the city has continued to contribute pioneers and legends in multiple fields. It continues to draw a huge population of migrant workers, professionals and tourists over the years owing to its repute of being the safest city in India. Combined with an ambient tropical weather and adequate amenities for recreation it serves as an ideal home for many.

Being a multicultural hot pot, with a diverse populace synonymous of the larger canvas, that is, India - it is tough to define Chennai in brief. However, be it the past, the present or the future, the city with a friendly population and essential amenities has continued to be a HOME to whosoever comes under its huge wings.
